Should I Get A Kindle?

by Kim on August 19, 2010

Need some advice and input.  I like reading, which is kind of a funny comment coming from me because  growing up I was not a big fan of reading.  Now that I am an adult, I realize how much education is available in books.

So with that said, I am considering a Kindle – Latest Generation.  I like the idea of carrying around multiple books at a time to read on the go instead of carrying just the one book that I am reading at the time.

My hesitation is what happens if there is a system failure in the Kindle and all my books get lost.  Is there a way to get those books back?

Another question, if I buy a Kindle today and then want to upgrade to the latest and greatest Kindle version in a year or two, can I transfer all my books over?  Am I able to read my books on my PC or does that require extra costs?

Are Kindles as easy to read from as a book?  I have to admit I am a “dog ear” kind of person and like to bend the corner of the page down in the book so I know where I left off; I think I totally lose that experience with a Kindle, correct?

Help me decide, should I get a Kindle?

I have often considered getting a kindle like device, however keep in mind that the Ts and Cs are kind of strict on those. Since the Kindles are connected to the internet, Amazon can control what services that are available on it. At one time these devices had the “text to speech” ability. However, since that cut into the audio book market, they disabled it.

Even the iPad or the Sony equivalent look like an appealing alternative.

Hi Russ, thanks for visiting and for your comment. I looked at the Sony, I actually like that foot print a little bit better, but I don’t think they offer the 3G option. I was concerned about the Ts & Cs and them changing at the whim of Amazon. I have to be honest, I just can’t seem to drink the “i” Kool-aid, iPhone, iPad, they just seem to be hyped up a bit too much just cause they have an Apple on it. I’m still not sure what I will end up doing. What stopped you from getting a Kindle?

Now that the new Kindle has come out, they have improved on two things that really stopped me before. The price and the refresh rate. You can get a 3G-less one for $139. Plus they promise a quicker refresh rate, which in this age of technology should not ever been an issue.

Oh refresh rate, I didn’t even consider that.
